Physical Description
The Green Street program is located in a three-floor renovated town-house. There are ten single studio rooms available. Each studio has a small kitchenette with a microwave oven, stovetop and sink. The size of the rooms vary. Each floor has a bathroom that is shared by residents of that floor. The building has central heat and air-conditioning. On the first floor, there is a common area that consists of a living room with a television and small dining area. There is a common kitchenette with a sink, stovetop, microwave, small toaster/oven and dishwasher that is available for residents. On the first floor, there is also a small porch for the residents to use. In the basement there is a laundry room. The 4 rooms on the 3rd floor are designated for women and the four rooms on the second floor are designated for men. The two rooms on the first floor can be occupied by either men or women.
The building is handicapped accessible and the first floor bathroom and one of the first floor rooms is also handicapped accessible. Smoking is allowed in the studio rooms but not in any other part of the building.
Neighborhood
Green Street is located in Central Square, parallel to Mass. Ave. and in between Brookline and Pearl Streets. There are numerous stores, restaurants, coffee shops, etc in the area, including a grocery store and several pharmacies. There are safety concerns about the area and residents need to be very cautious about walking alone at night. Green Street is a 5 minute walk to the Central Square T (Red Line), and about a 5 minute walk to two major bus lines. Parking is difficult, although for short-term parking there is a public parking garage on Green St that is reasonably priced.
Staffing and Services
Staff are generally available to Green Street residents 7 days a week. Referrals are accepted through the Department of Mental Health. To be eligible a person has to have had persistent psychiatric difficulties and have been homeless or in transitional living situations. Potential residents need to be self-medicating. Green Street is for individuals who can manage a highly independent living situation but could also benefit from receiving support around a variety of different needs such as substance abuse issues, vocational concerns, etc.
