Physical Description
The Merriam Street Program in Somerville is located in a three story building on the corner of Merriam Street and Somerville Avenue. The staff office is located on the first floor, the men's apartment is on the second floor, and the women's apartment is on the third floor. The men's and women's apartments are structurally identical. Each apartment accommodates four residents, each of whom has their own ample-sized bedroom. Each apartment has its own kitchen, living room, and one bathroom which are shared by the four residents. The eat-in kitchens provide modern conveniences such as a microwave, garbage disposal,dishwasher and self-cleaning oven. There is also individual cabinet space to store food. Each apartment has a television, VCR, and stereo system as well as an air-conditioner for summer comfort. For added convenience, a washer, dryer and storage space are located in the basement. Off- street parking is available for residents with cars. Merriam Street has a small yard with a garden, and there is a picnic bench and a grill for summer barbecues.
Neighborhood
Merriam Street is located one block north of Union Square, directly across the street from the Somerville Fire and Police Departments. Some of the other conveniences located within easy walking distance are the Union Square Post Office, Target Department Stores, a variety of restaurants, including Dunkin' Donuts, Burger King, and a large selection of ethnic eateries. The Market Basket Supermarket is a short bus ride away on Somerville Avenue and smaller grocery stores are located nearby. Cambridge Hospital is within walking distance and is also accessible by bus. There is a Catholic church in Union Square.
The Merriam Street Program is located directly on the bus line. The 87 bus to Davis Square stops directly in front of the program on Somerville Avenue. The 91 and 86 buses to Central and Harvard Square can be easily accessed at the top of Merriam Street on the corner of Merriam and Washington Streets. These bus lines interconnect to many other bus and train lines.
