May 7, 1998As residents of Upland Road, we are saddened that some of our neighbors have defeated CASCAP's affordable housing project.Avon Hill, like all other neighborhoods in Cambridge, shares responsibility for providing housing at reasonable cost. With the defeat of rent control, affordable housing has become even more difficult to come by. Clustering all lower-than-market housing in a few neighborhoods only creates ghettos and further divides rich from poor in a city that is becoming too dis-integrated. CASCAP is a high-quality organization that has done much good over the years. Its proposal involved no change in the size of the house it was planning to use; rather, it would have rehabilitated a decaying structure. The building is only a few houses away from other large, multi-family buildings on Upland Road; the six to eight families could not conceivably make a noticeable difference in any neighbor's lifestyle. We regret that CASCAP did not solicit our support for this project. We would gladly have given it. JUDITH PERLSTEIN
